USCG: Container Ship “Paul Russ” Runs Aground Outside Port of Saipan

The Antigua and Barbuda flagged container ship PAUL RUSS went aground en route the port of Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI).

Earlier this morning, U.S. Coast Guard Sector Guam received a call from the Saipan Harbor Master reporting that the vessel was aground while transiting the channel in-bound to the port of Saipan.

The vessel is 526 feet in length and carrying containers. There have been no reports of injuries or damage to the vessel. Notifications of the incident have been made to the Port of Saipan and CNMI Homeland Security & Emergency Management.

A Unified Command Center (UCC) is being established at the Commonwealth Ports Authority Seaport Office to coordinate response efforts for the grounded vessel.

U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port (COTP) Guam has established a 500 yard safety zone around the grounded vessel in the vicinity of buoy number 3. Mariners are not authorized within the zone without authorization from COTP Guam.

Mariners, recreational boaters and persons are advised to exercise extreme caution in areas in the vicinity around the safety zone due to the dangers associated with a grounded vessel.
