Ghana Navy frees ship, after arresting 8 Nigerian pirates

A gang of eight pirates, all Nigerians who swooped and hijacked a Nigerian cargo vessel, the MV Mariam, was on Saturday, rounded up, by the Ghana Navy.

The Ghanaian navy reportedly displayed so much professionalism, that no one, including either the armed pirates or the unarmed crew of nine was injured, when the Ghana Navy crew aboard GNS BLIKA effected the arrest.

The Public Relations Officer of Garrison 1, of the Ghana Armed Forces, Lt Maxwell Asola, observed that the gang of eight pirates were all Nigerians, confirming that the vessel owners had alerted them of the incident, noting that  the pirates stated via telephone, that they hijacked the vessel, so as to use it to carry out an attack somewhere; a reason which prompted the Ghana navy into making an urgent counter attack, which unmasked the pirates as unscrupulous Nigerians.

Asola further indicated that the navy effected the arrest in the morning hours around 10.30 hours,

The exactitude of where the vessel hijack took place was however yet to be known.
