The Kano State Fire Service on Wednesday said it actually saved 1,430 lives and goods worth N2.4 billion from 760 fire incidents in the state, between January and December 2018.

The Public Relations Officer of the service, Alhaji Saidu Mohammed, disclosed this in Kano, lamenting that 149 lives were however lost through collapsed buildings and road accidents, while 319 houses and 441 shops were razed in the fire outbreaks.

He also noted that property valued at N2.4 billion were destroyed during the period, while the service received 1,052 rescue calls and 210 false alarms from residents.

He said that the use of inferior electrical materials; use of boiling rings; accidents, as well as poor handling of electrical appliances, cooking gas and fireplace were the major causes of the inferno.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Air Force says the Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE has effectively destroyed a building being used as meeting venue by Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters near Baga in Northern Borno, alongside its entire occupants.

NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, who annouced this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja said the operation was carried out on Tuesday, following series of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions confirmed that the building was being used as an assembly point by the terrorists.

“Consequently, the ATF dispatched a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Alpha Jet aircraft to attack the building.

“A direct hit was recorded on the target leading to significant damage to the structure and neutralisation of the occupants,” the spokesman said.
