The EU-funded project to expand the Swedish Port of Ystad and enable it to accommodate larger ferries kicked off with a sod-turning ceremony early May.
The entire project is worth an estimated EUR 94 million (approximately USD 105.4 million) and will include construction of two new deeper ferry berths at a new pier located in the outer port basin, as well as of related facilities in reclaimed areas located to the east of the new berths.
A dedicated area for bunkering of LNG is also envisioned.
The project aims at increasing the capacity and upgrading the facilities of the Port of Ystad to meet the current market needs, by accommodating larger ferry vessels.
Works are expected to be completed by the end of 2020 when a new 202.4-meter-long, LNG-powered, RoPax ferry is scheduled to be delivered to Polferries. The ferry will connect Poland’s Świnoujście port and the Port of Ystad.
The Port of Ystad is one of the largest ferry and shipping points in Southern Sweden, and a connection hub to Poland and Central Europe.
