The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) as part of its efforts to increase patronage at the Eastern Ports, on Monday, approved a 10 percent discount on harbour dues in all concession terminals, at the Eastern Ports. The approval takes immediate effect.

An initiative that is capable of significantly pushing business to the Eastern ports, while relieving Lagos of its current gridlock, will specifically affect Calabar, Rivers and Delta Ports.

The Authority however clarified that the discount will only apply to four categories of vessels/cargoes:

  1. Container vessels with at least 250 TEUs
  2. General Cargo vessels with at least 16,000 MT
  3. Combo Vessels with at least 16,000 MT; and,
  4. RORO Vessels with at least 250 units of Vehicles

The NPA General Manager, Corporate and Strategic Communications, Jatto Adams pointedly highlighted that the harbour due discount would not apply to all Vessels coming in ballast; Vessels calling at private jetties; and all vessels calling, carrying Liquid bulk.
