Exporters group under the aegis of Tropical Wood Exporters Association of Nigeria (TWEAN) has faulted the Federal Government’s 2006 policy on port concession, saying that poor vision and bad planning encapsulated in the regime plummeted exports, rather than boost it.
They also expressed concern over the current congestion rocking the nation’s seaports, lamenting the fate of some Nigerian products oversea due to hindered exportation procedures, exacerbated by bottlenecks, faced by shippers, in the last thirteen years.
Speaking on poor vision, the TWEAN boss, Mr. Omotayo Omotoye noted the general lack of handling equipment by most concessionaires, which he maintained, created the lacuna for operators to pay additional charges in the course of exporting Nigerian goods abroad.
The TWEAN boss attributed the traffic gridlock being faced by shippers and other stakeholders, to negligence on the part of the concessionaires, adding that the deplorable condition of the roads was actually, secondary.
Speaking further, he highlighted that between the month of June and July 2019, the inadequacies of the railway system, failed to ensure the accommodation of containers at the APM.Terminal, due to congestion, pointing out that movement of boxes via rail network was suspended, as a result of poor facilities on ground.
Mr. Omotayo Omotoye posited that most of the terminals were currently battling with congestion due to poor and obsolete equipment at their disposal.
“Recently, the movement of boxes via rail network was halted due to the fact that there’s no space inside the terminal; that is, APMT; and you will agree with me that the rail system has nothing to do with the bad roads that some people claimed, to be the problem at the port.
“The truth is that port concession has failed completely, as far as exports regime was concerned”, he stressed, addingthat the gridlock along the ports corridors can be attributed to the concessionaires’ negligence or poor foresight.
Stressing that the Federal Government policy of port concession failed to yield the expected results in the sphere of exports trade, Omotoye also grieved that some Nigerian products packaged for exportation overseas, sometimes arrived destination, after expiration.
He therefore urged the authorities to task the concessionaires on the need to provide a more enabling and business friendly environment needed by shippers in order to meet the unfolding challenges of meeting targets, if the nation is to achieve optimally, in the area of exportation business.
