Some Unions in the Aviation sector have applauded President Muhammadu Buhari for the approval of N10 billion to upgrade the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu State.
They made the commendation on Monday in Abuja, noting that the move by Buhari would advance the standardisation process of airports in the country.
Mr Samuel Wuyep, Chairman, Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association (ATSSSAN), Abuja Chapter of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, said the intervention fund from Federal Government would tremendously improve security and safety at the airport.
He suggested thorough monitoring to ensure that experts executing the project carried out quality work.
Mr Hector Nnadi, Chairman of Joint Consultative and Negotiating Council (JCNC), Ministry of Aviation, hailed Buhari for approving the fund and commended the Federal Government for prioritising infrastructure development in every part of the country.
According to Nnadi, it is the responsibility of the government to ensure Nigeria’s infrastructure is fixed.
He expressed optimism that the Minister of Aviation, Mr Hadi Sirika, would do everything possible to ensure that Enugu Airport was upgraded as fast as possible with the available resources.
The chairman said that the proposed re-establishment of a national carrier by the Federal Government would be different from the defunct Nigeria Airways in terms of ownership.
According to him, the government plans to partner with the private sector to ensure sustainability of the proposed national carrier.
He added that the theme of the seventh edition of Aviation Workers’ week, scheduled for December, would be “National Carrier: Root to National Economic Growth.“
