The Founder, National Association Of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), Dr. Boniface Okechukwu Aniebonam has described the statement made by the newly appointed Country Manager of APM Terminals Apapa Limited, Mr. Claus Laursen on port congestion as one made out ignorance.

The remark was more like ‘Welcome to Nigeria’.

Aniebonam who was reacting to the statement made by the new APMT boss when the latter paid a visit to the Executive Secretary of Nigerian Shippers Council, Barr. Bello Hassan on Wednesday told newsmen in his office that the Country Manager failed to realise that the Ports system has collapsed and that nothing is presently working in the ports.

Laursen, had during his visit to  Bello,  accused  Freight forwarders of causing congestion at the terminal as a result of their not coming forward to clear their containers, which he said has contributed in no small way to the backlog of ships on the Nigerian territorial waters.

But Aniebonam argued that the system collapse has led to freight forwarders suffering with no visible ending, adding that the APMT boss was not properly briefed on the workings in the ports. The NAGAFF founder said Laursen should have studied the workings of the Nigerian Maritime industry, paid courtesy visits to NAGAFF and ANLCA, before making such an unguided statement.

He accused Terminal Operators and Shipping companies of frustrating stakeholders with no agency to regulate them.

He advised the Nigerian Shippers’ Council to enforce its powers for defaulters to comply.

He, however, commended Hassan Bello for all efforts being made to regulate the industry but said it needed to be more forceful.
