5 die in Delta floods, Okowa urges FG to build dams, dredge major rivers

… Gunmen kill 2, abduct 7 others in Niger community***

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta has called on the Federal Government to build new dams and dredge major rivers in the country to check to flood.

Okowa, who made the call while addressing newsmen after visiting flood victims at some Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps, said five persons lost their lives to flood in the state.

He also urged the Federal Government to make efforts at de-silting Rivers Niger and Benue to deepen their depths to accommodate the high volumes of flood water.

He said the best way to end the loss of lives and valuables to flood was for the government to take proactive steps towards stalling perennial flooding each time neighbouring countries opened their dams.

He commiserated with families that lost persons and property to the flood, adding that the state government had established 11 holding camps to take care of displaced persons.

He said that daily feeding of the IDPs was a priority and that medical facilities and personnel were in various camps to take care of the medical needs of the inmates to avoid possible outbreaks of diseases.

“I was informed by the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Patrick Ukah, when the team briefed me on Monday, that as a result of the flood, five deaths were recorded, not inside the camps but across the state.

“We have 11 camps that are currently in place and some of them are in schools and some others are in high places in some locations where the schools have been overrun by the flood water.

“Climate change, obviously, is becoming very impactful globally and it is beginning to affect a lot of issues.

The sea levels are rising and so is the water level.

“Another issue is the dam in Cameroon.

It always causes a major overflow in our river.

“From the preliminary information I have, what could be done is to build our own holding dams here in Nigeria and a regular de-silting of our rivers.

“And, that is not going to be the state government’s function.

It is that of the Federal Government because of the type of dam that will be built across the river.

So, it is going to be a major dam.

“So, I believe that it is important that the Federal Government will look into it very quickly and begin to start the process,” he said.

“When we look at the pains that come to our people cumulatively as a result of the flood and the destruction it brings, it is so huge and runs into several billions.

“So, I think that it is something that the Federal Government would consider building a dam across River Niger to prevent this from happening.

“We are immediately taking care of the people in the camp, which is the first thing to do by providing food, security and healthcare for them here.

“They have been organised into groups and they are cooking for themselves and we ensure that there is a regular supply of food items to cook.

So, we are sure that they are not suffering from any form of hunger.

“We can see doctors and nurses here, living under the same conditions as the IDPs just to provide health care.

In two of the camps, some pregnant women have already been delivered by medical personnel.

“You can see that they are well taken care of.

In previous years, after their return to their homes, we have always provided some form of assistance and we will also do so this year.

“We are always compassionate,” the governor said.

He called on donor agencies and well-spirited individuals to partner government in alleviating the plights of those affected by the flood, adding that his administration would assist them.

The camps visited by the governor included those at Ogbe-Afor Primary School and Oneh Primary School in Asaba and Ewulu Mixed Grammar School, Ewulu in Aniocha South Local Government Area.

Ogbe-Afor Primary School camp has 1,548 IDPs, Oneh Primary School, 1,684 IDPs and 1,475 in Ewulu camp.

In the meantime, the Police Command in Niger has confirmed the killing of two residents and abduction of seven others by gunmen in Gulu village of Lapai Local Government Area of the state.

Mr Wasiu Abiodun, the Command’s spokesman, made this known in a statement on Tuesday in Minna.

Abiodun said that on Oct.18 at about 0200 hours, the gunmen invaded Gulu General Hospital, Lapai LGA, fired some gunshots and went to the staff quarters where they killed two persons.

He said that the gunmen also abducted eight persons including a medical doctor from the quarters.

The police spokesman further said that the assailants later abandoned one of the abducted persons, a female, with her two-year-old baby.

He said that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Ogundele Ayodeje, has however led a reinforcement team from Minna to the area for an on-the-spot assessment.

Abiodun added that armed security personnel and other tactical teams along with vigilante group members had been deployed to the area to ensure the successful rescue of the victims.

He said that investigation had already commenced, in order to apprehend the abductors and rescue the victims.

Tinubu: We Have Eliminated 300 Boko Haram, Other Banditry Groups’ Commanders

… Vows to reduce the cost of living, saying efforts will dovetail into greater farming and bumper agricultural harvests

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday said that Nigerian security forces have eliminated more than 300 commanders of the Boko Haram terrorist group in the last year.

Also eliminated are many commanders of other banditry groups, especially in the North-West and North-East.

Tinubu gave the security update in his National Broadcast to mark the nation’s 64th Independence Anniversary.

“I am happy to announce to you, my compatriots, that our administration is winning the war on terror and banditry.

“Our target is to eliminate all the threats of Boko Haram, banditry, kidnapping for ransom, and the scourge of all forms of violent extremism.

“Within one year, our government has eliminated Boko Haram and bandit commanders faster than ever.

“As of the last count, over 300 Boko Haram and bandit commanders have been eliminated by our gallant troops in the Northeast, Northwest, and some other parts of the country.

“We have restored peace to hundreds of communities in the North, and thousands of our people have been able to return home.

“It is an unfinished business, and our security agencies are committed to ending it as quickly as possible.

“As soon as we can restore peace to many communities in the troubled parts of the North, our farmers can return to their farms.

“We expect to see a leap in food production and a downward spiral in food costs. I promise you, we shall not falter on this,” he said.

In the meantime, President Bola Tinubu has stressed that his administration is taking appropriate measures to reduce the cost of living.

The President said this in his Independence Day broadcast on Tuesday.

“The central concern of our people today is the high cost of living, especially food costs. This concern is shared by many around the globe as prices and the cost of living continue to rise worldwide.

“My fellow Nigerians, be assured that we are implementing many measures to reduce the cost of living here at home,” said the President.

He commended the governors of Kebbi, Niger, Jigawa, Kwara, Nasarawa, and the Southwest governors that had embraced the agricultural production programme of his administration.

“I urge other states to join the Federal Government in investing in mechanised farming. We are playing our part by supplying fertiliser and making available tractors and other farm equipment.

“Last week, the Federal Executive Council approved establishing a local assembly plant for 2,000 John Deere tractors, combine harvesters, disc riders, bottom ploughs and other farm equipment. The plant has a completion time of six months,” he said.

He added that the energy transition programme being implemented by his government was on course.

“We are expanding the adoption of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas for mass transit with private sector players.

“The Federal Government is ready to assist the thirty-six States and FCT in acquiring CNG buses for cheaper public transportation.

“Fellow Nigerians, while we are working to stabilise the economy and secure the country, we also seek to foster national unity and build social harmony and cohesion,” he said.
