Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) Board of Trustees (BOT) bared its fangs on Wednesday, dissolved the Tony Iju-led National Executive Committee (NECOM), and immediately set up an interim committee, to run the affairs of the association, pending another general election, in six months time.
The BoT which also instantly took possession of the Association’s National Secretariat, popularly called the Inde Dikko House, located at Amuwo Odofin in Lagos, equally approved a new NECOM, comprising Pius Ujubonu as Acting President; Jamiu Adeyinka as acting Vice President; Joe Sanni, acting National Secretary; Francis Ituah as acting National Publicity Secretary; Alhaji Usman as Treasurer and Waheed Gbadamosi as the acting Financial Secretary.
Sir John Oforbike retained his leadership position in the Western Zone, the Northern Zone has Sanusi Wakili, while Obi Chima is leader in the Eastern Zone.
The inauguration ceremony which was totally peaceful was witnessed by a team of crack operatives, from the office of the Police Area Commander, Festac Division.
The development is coming almost two years after a Court order by Justice Rilwan Aikawa in Suit No. FHC/L/CS/921/2020, barring Tony Iju’s National Executive Committee (NECOM) from parading Itself as National officers of ANLCA or signing any documents on ANLCA’s behalf, since 26th August 2020, and handing over powers to the Registered Board of Trustees (BOT), led by Alhaji Taiwo Mustapha, who now took the constitutional step on Wednesday, the 24th of August 2022, to officially declare the tenure extinction of a NECOM elected in Enugu on the 8th of March 2018, as dead and of no effect thenceforth.
The BOT Chairman, Alhaji Taiwo Mustapha made it crystal clear that all the so-called tenure extension and constitutional amendments done in Owerri-Imo State on the 16th of December 2020, were illegal, null and void, as it was done ultra vires the law, and orders of the Federal High Court.
More so, as till date, the orders have remained unchallenged and un-vacated; and therefore, are still valid and subsisting.
Alhaji Mustapha quoted certain constitutional provisions, in tandem with provisions of the extant Supreme Constitution of ANLCA 2008 (as amended), Sections 13, Subsection 4, (c-d) and Section 22;
Subsection 2 (c), and subsequently appointed and inaugurated the interim National Executive Committee (NECOM), headed by Chief Pius Ujubuonu as acting National President for the next 90 days as prescribed in the Constitution.
All the appointees were sworn in by a lawyer from the Chambers of Barr. Emmanuel Osonwa and Co.
Indicated Mustapha: “In line with section 13C of the Supreme constitution of ANLCA, we pronounce that there would be an interim government that would run the association.
“The BOT is empowered to run the association for six months, but we are transferring that power to the interim executives for a period of either 3-months or 6-months” Mustapha stated and charged all appointees to be law-abiding.
He also urged maritime industry stakeholders to dissociate from the activities of the former Tony Iju executives, which was lately administered by Dr Kayode Farinto, Alhaji Babatunde Mukaila and others, describing them as impostors.
Shortly after his acceptance speech, the Interim National President, Chief Pius Ujubuonu made two appointments: naming Alhaji Yakub Mustapha Oladimeji as his Chief of Staff and Mr Harrison Oditah as the Chief Security officer to the Acting National President.
Speaking further, Chief Ujubonu assured Nigerians that the new teamwork assiduously restored peace, and again put the body on the road its former glory.
“The board has taken a very decisive decision today, we are assuring you that to the best of our ability, you would not regret this action.
“You are the owners of the association, we can only be great if we corporate together.
“Gone are the days when the association will be put under lock and keys for weeks.
All ANLCA members are enjoined to henceforth start coming to the National Secretariat of the association.
The building belongs to all of us. It’s not the property of any single individual.”
“Ours is to reconcile all frayed nerves and bring everybody onboard.
We cannot work if the chapter chairmen, Zonal leaders, and the board are not with us” Ujubonu further stated.
The Maritime First learned that the police team that stood sentry was consequent upon the Commissioner of Police (CP’s) directive, which ensured the presence of Police from Area E Command.
In the meantime, the head of the just dissolved NECOM, Dr Kayode Farinto, said on Wednesday in Lagos, attributed the development to the handiwork of expelled members who refused to leave after being expelled by the National Executive Committee (NEC).
Farinto who acknowledged a break-in into the national secretariat of the association said the development occurred while he led a delegation on a national assignment to the Lekki Deep Seaport.
“What you are seeing in ANLCA is political shenanigans by cantankerous old men who refused to leave the association after being expelled.
“Unfortunately, we were on a national assignment when we learned that they have encroached into the national secretariat and forcefully taken over the secretariat, breaking the padlocks and keys.
“But there is nothing to worry about, the expelled members were not expelled by me, it was the NEC, I don’t know why a part of the body will say it doesn’t belong to the body,” he said.
