Athletics: National camp invitation excites Ezechukwuchiri, 16-year-old high jump wizkid

Fiaku Ezechukwuchiri, a 16-year-old high jump prodigy, says his invitation to the national athletics camp is a huge morale booster for him.

Ezechukwuchiri, the current national record holder in Under-18 High Jump with a personal best performance, said this in Awka on Thursday.

Ezechukwuchiri joined 54 other athletes at the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) national camp in Asaba, Delta State, for preparations ahead of Africa Under-18 and Under-20 championships, scheduled to hold in Ndola, Zambia, late April.

Ezechukwuchiri said he had always dreamt of being an Olympian since he took interest in sports and the high jump specifically, about eight years ago when he was in primary school.

The lanky jumper said he would not only prepare to emerge top in Zambia but endeavour to sustain performance till he hits the world stage.

“I am happy with this invitation, it is a huge encouragement to me, I am going to do the best for my country and for myself.

“I  still have my eyes on the Olympics, I want to take my career to the top,” he said.

Ezechukwuchiri commended Johnny Igboka, a national coach, whom he described as his mentor and father for identifying his potential early and nurturing him.

Igboka is among the coaches currently preparing the athletes for the competition.

Most of the athletes in the camp were selected from those who participated at the recently-concluded  AFN Under-18 and Under-20 All Comer’s trials held at the Ahmadu Bello stadium, Kaduna, in March.

…Executive Secretary blames increment from N2.89m on rising operational costs, exchange rate fluctuations and inflation

Participation at the 2024 Pilgrimage in Adamawa may shrink as the State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Commission has announced N4.679 million fare, for this year’s Hajj.

What goes for Adamawa, may similarly affect the other states of the country, as hajj fare in 2023 was only N2.89 million.

The Executive Secretary of the commission, Malam Abubakar Salihu, made the announcement at a news briefing on Tuesday in Yola.

Salihu attributed the increment in the Hajj fare to rising operational costs, exchange rate fluctuations and inflation.
He said that the decision was made after careful consideration and consultations with relevant stakeholders.
According to him, the commission is committed to providing the best possible services, while ensuring transparency and accountability in the utilisation of the funds.

He called on intending pilgrims to always adhere to the rules and regulations both in Nigeria and Saudi Arabia to enhance a hitch-free and successful pilgrimage.

Salihu also stressed the need for intending pilgrims to comply with the procedures and protocols established by the commission.
He emphasised the importance of continuous orientation and education for the intending pilgrims.

The executive secretary reiterated his commitment to ensuring a successful and memorable Hajj pilgrimage for the intending pilgrims in the state.
