CO2 leak kills 10, injures 19 on board Panamax bulk carrier, in China

A massive carbon dioxide leak on board of a bulk carrier, JIN HAI XIAN in Yellow Sea has resulted in the death of 10 persons.

The CO2 leak occurred during fire suppressing system maintenance works, at around 1600 local time on Saturday May 25, at Longyan Port, Weihai, Shandong Province, China.

Sadly, the disastrous leak not only killed 10, but also injured 19 people, who understandably comprised of both crew and workers. 

All the injured were immediately rushed and hospitalized, even as the ship remained docked at Longyan since May 17.   

In another development, two Japanese cargo ships collided at around 0200 Tokyo time on Sunday, May 26, some 6 nnautical miles south of Inobusaki Cape, Chiba Prefecture, Honshu island, east of Tokyo.

The Fleetmon noted that one of the vessels, SENSHOU MARU which was loaded with 1600 tons of steel, iimmediately sank, with 5 crew on board out of which four had since been missing. The ship was en route from Kashima Port to Osaka.  

The second vessel, SUMIHO MARU remained more or less unscathed, even though there was no information either on her route or cargo. 

The SENSHOU MARU’s Captain was however rescued. 

The General cargo ship SUMIHO MARU, with IMO registered No 8742666, and dwt 1800, was built in 2008; and is Japan flagged.
