The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reiterated its commitment to supporting President Bola Tinubu’s food security initiative by streamlining processes that facilitate efficient food importation.
This commitment was expressed by the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, during the launch of the book “Impactful Public Relations in Customs Management” at the NCS Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, 13 August 2024.
Authored by Image Merchants Promotion Limited, the book highlights the progressive public relations strategies implemented under the CGC’s leadership.
In his remarks, CGC Adeniyi emphasized the importance of ensuring that food items are imported swiftly and cost-effectively, thereby reducing consumer prices and enhancing food security nationwide.
The book launch coincided with the 2nd Economic Confidential Annual Lecture, where CGC Adeniyi underscored the Customs Service’s pivotal role in tackling food security challenges.
“There’s an ambitious target to cultivate more than 10 million hectares of land for food production. This initiative not only aims to boost our food security but also to leverage our abundant arable land, only 40% of which is currently cultivated”
He noted the Government’s efforts to boost agricultural production through targeted measures and incentives for farmers.

He also highlighted the Federal Government’s temporary removal of tariffs and import duties on essential staples like rice, wheat, maize, and sorghum for six months.
He pointed out that this policy aims to alleviate the immediate challenge of high food prices while reinforcing the Customs Service’s role as the gatekeeper of Nigeria’s international trade.
He further elaborated on Nigeria’s agricultural potential, citing a 2017 report by Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC) that identified 84 million hectares of arable land, with only 40% currently under cultivation.
“This represents a significant opportunity for expanding agricultural production and enhancing food security,” Adeniyi added.
In addition to his policy discussions, CGC Adeniyi expressed deep gratitude to Image Merchants Promotion Limited for their efforts in publishing the book, recognizing it as a valuable contribution to advancing public relations within the NCS.
Earlier in the event, Tope Fasua, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Economy, represented Vice President Kashim Shettima and chaired the occasion.
“The NCS’s contributions as a regulator and facilitator of international trade are vital, and their public relations efforts add immense value to the country.”
While speaking on the theme: “Leveraging Effective Communication for Revenue Generation and Economic Development,” he specifically praised the Image Merchants Promotion Limited for their consistent excellence in research and investigative journalism.
Vice President Shettima, through Fasua, commended the Nigeria Customs Service for its crucial role in securing the nation’s borders and boosting the economy, noting, “The NCS’s contributions as a regulator and facilitator of international trade are vital, and their public relations efforts add immense value to the country.”
Yushau Shauib, the Chief Executive Officer of Image Merchants Promotion Limited, also spoke at the event, expressing his appreciation for CGC Adeniyi’s exceptional engagement with the media.
Shauib explained that the book is a tribute to Adeniyi’s transformative leadership and commitment to transparent and effective public relations within the Customs Service.
