CUSTOMS: Investigation Begins Over Alleged Extortion By FOU Senior Officer At Mokwa

 The Comptroller Federal Operations Unit Zone ‘B’ Kaduna, Comptroller Dalha Wada Chedi has handed over the officer alleged to have extorted the sum of N500, 000.00 from a car buyer by the name Muhammad Dahiru Ahmad along Mokwa-Jebba Road in Niger State.

The Maritime First learnt the alleged suspect was handed over to the Assistant Provost Marshal (APM) Customs Police Unit, Kaduna, at the Headquarters of the Unit in Kaduna on Monday, 26th February 2024.

  The Comptroller while addressing newsmen in the premises of the Unit confirmed that the suspected Officer involved in this unwholesome act is indeed an operative of the Unit deployed to the Mokwa Patrol Team in Niger State and this unfortunate incident occurred in the early hour of Thursday 22nd February 2024 as reported by the complainant.

The Comptroller said that “upon hearing the alleged unfortunate incident, I directed the Customs Police Unit in the Zone that is responsible for enforcing discipline in the Service to apprehend the Officer and move him to the Unit’s Headquarters here in Kaduna for further interrogation. Also, the Complainant was invited to assist in the investigation as well”.

 “The Comptroller General of Customs Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR and his Management team frowned at such unruly behavior as such the disciplinary committee will be diligent and firm. The Service is very pragmatic and practical in disciplinary cases and this one will not be an exception”. 

The Comptroller handed over the suspected Officer to the APM Customs Police Unit for further investigation. 

In his words, “The Officer is hereby handed over to the APM Customs Police Unit for discreet investigation and the findings of the investigation will be transmitted to NCS-HQ for further action by the Nigeria Customs Service Board as it is the only body that handles the Appointment, Promotions, and Discipline of all Senior Officers of the Service”. 

Investigation begins…

 He continues by saying that “this unprofessional and ungodly act will not be condoned. A thorough investigation has just commenced by this handing over to unravel the facts surrounding the allegation and the outcome shall be made public to serve as a deterrent to others”.

 “We are deeply concerned and we assure the general public that the matter will be treated with the deserved vigour, decisiveness, and transparency”.

The Comptroller assured the general public that the Unit will update the general public as the investigation progresses, 

“In addition, the Unit will continue to update the general public as the investigation progresses while appreciating the understanding and usual support of the public”. “I am humbly urging the general public not to relent in rendering such invaluable support.

Navy Nabs 2 Suspected Fuel Smugglers, Seizes 5,100 Litres Of Petrol

Navy Promotes 55 Senior Officers; NAF Council Promotes 31 AVMs, 26 Air Commodores

 The Nigerian Navy, Forward Operation Base, Ibaka, in Akwa Ibom has arrested two suspects and impounded their wooden boat laden with 5,100 litres of petrol.

The Commanding Officer of the base, Navy Capt. Uche Aneke, handed over the suspects, the boat and the petrol over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ibaka on Sunday.

Aneke said a patrol team of the Navy arrested the suspects on Feb. 22 following an intelligence report about suspected smuggling activities in the area.

“Patrolling Naval gunboats were deployed to intercept the wooden boat.

“In the boat were the two suspected smugglers and 5,100 litres of petrol concealed under bags of yams, cartons of drinks, other beverages and several cartons of floor tiles, all covered with tarpaulin,’’ he said.

Aneke warned individuals and groups involved in the illegal business to desist or prepare to face the wrath of the law.

He also warned criminals to steer clear of Nigeria’s territorial waters, stressing that security agencies would not condone illegal activities in the country’s coastal areas.

Head of NSCDC’s anti-vandalism unit in Akwa Ibom, Mr Micheal Asibor, who took delivery of the suspects and the exhibits assured of diligent prosecution of the incident.

Security Patrol Boats Will Boost Efficiency, Productivity, And Revenue- Bello-Koko

…As Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyeega Oyetola commissions seven Security patrol boats, to tame hoodlums, entrench a business-friendly environment

The Nigerian Ports Authority NPA Managing Director,  Mohammed Bello-Koko has reiterated his commitment to driving traffic and productivity, particularly in the Eastern ports.

He stated this during the commissioning of seven security boats, stressing that while he was excited by the rising traffic in the Eastern ports, especially in Onne, he would not rest on the present achievement, but rather further pursue measures that would entrench a regime of a business-friendly environment, needed for higher productivity and revenue.

“This event is another testament to our commitment to continuously improve in the journey towards transforming our strategic intent of becoming the maritime logistics hub for sustainable port service in Africa from potential to actualities.

“Therefore, what we are witnessing today (Thursday 22, February 2024) is pursuant to achieving these deliverables in alliance with the Presidential directive with regards to performance with the MDAs; in addition to positioning us to fulfilling the fundamental requirements of security which constitutes a critical success factor in fulfilling two crucial aspects of our port concession statutory mandates of regulating maritime business and promoting Port security and safe haven for ships; and the second one, being safeguarding assets of the authority, while maintaining their optimal use.

“I, therefore, want to, on behalf of the management and staff of the NPA, commend and appreciate our amiable Minister, for his tireless endorsement of our efforts at enhancing the competitiveness of our ports”, the NPA Managing Director said.

He thanked the authority’s security partners, viz the Nigerian Navy, Police, Army, DSS, and the Lagos State Government, whose collaboration has continued to enhance the authority’s capability to detect, deter, and respond to security threats, often before they happen.

“The procurement of these seven security patrol boats we are commissioning, was preceded by a robust needs-assessment process which was undertaken by a highly experienced team, drawn from our security, marine, and operations division; and also the vessels management department, who are painstaking in following the procedure outputs specifications, including necessary sea trials”.

He therefore commended their dedication and commitment to duty and professionalism.

He however refrained from revealing the distinctive features of the boats, preferring only to call them game-changers, ready to demonstrate the country’s preparedness and capacity to respond to emergencies or threats, beyond the hoodlums’ belief.

“I have chosen to refrain from mentioning those superlatives here, because of the security implications. However, I am especially delighted to say that these security patrol boats position us to achieve our set goals of driving the desired vessel traffic to the Eastern Ports of Onne, Rivers, Warri, and Calabar Port complexes; where four of these vessels to be commissioned today will be allocated.

Although None has been in recent times, witnessed increased traffic, we can not rest on our laurels; we will continue to advocate and galvanised stakeholders’ opinions to continuously grow the fortune of the Eastern port”, the NPA Boss further assured.

Meanwhile, before cutting the tape, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegbiyega Oyetola expressed his delight for the boats, especially, as they provide Nigeria with a security edge needed to boost the nation’s effectiveness, productivity and revenue, stressing that these were all the things that President Bola Tinubu’s mandate is committed to promote.

“Security is Germaine to actualising the audacious growth of his excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR,  envisioned for the economy for the growth of the marine and blue economy”.
