A revered lawmaker, Senator Osita Bonaventure Izunaso has stressed the need for enhanced patriotism in the country, saying that Nigerians must see as home, their current place of abode, because Nigeria is one.

Senator Izunaso stated this in Lagos at the Weekend, at the Vintano Hotel in Lekki while he was being honoured by the Eminent Senators Club of Nigeria, over his immense, patriotic contributions to the unity and development of the country.

He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to everyone who came to witness the honour given to him, even as he stressed the importance of unity amongst Nigerians, using the lyrics of the New national anthem as a reference.

The Eminent  Senators Club of Nigeria is a non-profit, social organisation, whose aims include the harnessing of political and social clouts to promote legitimate business and economy of the country. The Club said it was enamoured by Izunaso’s visions and dedication, particularly in shaping the ethos of Nigeria, hence the need to celebrate his subsequent victory.

While speaking, Senator Izunaso said: ”Today an Igbo man is being honoured, and a Yoruba man is the Chairman of the occasion. What does this tell you? It tells you that we are all one. What other connection do you want?

“Anywhere you find yourself in Nigeria, that place should be your home, whether you find yourself in Sokoto, Kano, Onitsha, or Awka, that place should be your home, because, we are saying that now.

”I found in him, somebody with a sense of cohesion, sense of unity, and somebody who understands Nigeria very well and who is interested in the development of the country. He is someone i can describe as a patriotic Nigerian”.

He thanked the club members for honouring his friend and colleague while expressing his likeness for their togetherness.

“I like their sense of purpose and I think also that the sense of community that they are trying to put together”.

He appealed to the President of the Club not to put on hold the zeal in accommodating new members so that some other people could also be on board.

“Core in our vision equally is to look after the wellbeing of our members but we are also committed to positively affecting the communities around us through corporate social responsibilities and charities” he said.

Chief Akunna noted that the future of the club looks very bright and that with the support of their spouses, the sky is just the beginning point.

He thereafter announce that the club is making plans to hold it’s AGM next year outside the shores of the country.

Chief Akunna, however, hinted that next year’s entrance into the club might be difficult, as the club will raise the entrance bar.

Sokoto Customs Auctions 11,270L Of Petrol, Intercepts Railway Tracks Vandals

The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) Sokoto/ Zamfara Area Command on Monday auctioned 11,270 litres of petrol it apprehended from smugglers at N180 per litre.

The Command’s Comptroller, Mr Kamal Muhammad, said the petroleum products were seized by the intelligence-driven tactical team in the border areas in Sokoto State.

Muhammad said the team code-named ‘ Whirlwind Tactical Team’, was assigned to combat the smuggling of petroleum products to neighboring countries.

He explained that maritime and cross-border smuggling of petroleum products harms the overall supply chain of the product.

This is in addition to the possibility of funding of criminal activities with the proceeds.

”Even with the removal of subsidy, the smuggling of petrol brings about extra burden on the country both in terms of security of supply and securing of the scarce foreign exchange used to import the product.

”Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Mr Bashir Adewale, inaugurated the team on May 22, 2024 and swung into action, ” he said.

The comptroller said the command also apprehended a 20-foot container truck containing pieces of railway tracks along Kajiji road in the state.

According to him, three suspects were arrested in connection with the seizure who were suspected to be vandals of the nation’s railway lines.

He said the suspects could not offer valid explanations or tender documents on the consignment from the Federal Ministry of Transport.
