… Minister’s image maker says every allegation against Mu’azu, totally unfounded!***
Stakeholders in the Nigerian maritime industry have begun to pray for the Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Jaji Sambo, noting that the Minister is yet to sign a single Signature, capable of moving the industry significantly forward, with less than five months to the expiration of his tenure.
“We are praying. We are concerned. We asked God to provide a replacement for us, from the Maritime industry.
God answered our prayers by bringing up Mu’azu Sambo; and then, everything went quiet”, an industry watcher, Bolutife Egbewole told Maritime First.
He expressed his disappointment with the media: “You people are not helping matters.
It’s like everyday, you have one irrelevant thing after another to distract him with; you guys are not allowing the man to work”, Egbewole stated, blaming the media for generating an avalanche of distracting blitz that has so far prevented Mu’azu from concentrating.
Mu’azu Jaji Sambo, the Minister of Transportation at the 3rd Ministerial Performance Review Retreat for Ministers, Permanent Secretaries and Top Government Functionaries declared open by President Muhammadu Buhari, on “Enhance Security, Fight Corruption and Transform the Economy” at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.
Speaking in the same vein, an importer faulted the Minister’s recently expressed view that he would work till May 29, 2023, highlighting that once the election holds in February and a new President is elected, a transition Committee would be set up and nothing worthwhile would be achievable.
“You media people are not on the same page with us.
We pray for his success, while you people merely chorus for his distraction.
Honestly, till date, I haven’t seen one thing that I can commend him for.
“The Terminals licences are not renewed.
The Ports are standing exactly where he met it; nothing has changed.
I don’t think the Minister has added one single value since he came.
If he has, tell me.
The Maritime industry we prayed he should come to salvage is standing on the same spot.
And everyday, he talks, you media guys would deafened our ears with beautiful stories of ‘low hanging fruits!’
“Now, if the fruits are so low, how many has he plucked? Tell me, how many have you people, especially you media people, plucked for him?”, the woman, who spoke on condition of anonymity stressed, admonishing the Minister, to beware of the media.
Looking at the reporter in the eyes, she said: “Mark my words: the Minister is not going to disburse the Cabotage Vessels Financing Fund (CVFF).
The process is long; his time is short. And besides, there’s nothing, practically nothing on the ground, to show his commitment to disbursing it.
“As a woman, I know what is called ‘body language.
If we see him silently laying the pipes, vigorously pursuing the process for the disbursement, he doesn’t need to say it; then, everyone would know it.
But, till now, the whole gamut of the CVFF disbursement is a media affair!”, she stated further.
But an industry watcher, Tony Emordi said he was yet to understand the body language of the Minister, stressing that much as he loves him, the allegation in the industry is that the Minister has decided to withhold his pen, in order to force the stakeholders to negotiate with him.
When asked which part has he been sitting on, the industry watcher said: “Everything! They said he is preoccupied with the Nigerian Railway Corporation.
They said he has successfully domesticated the media. Now, only you can enlighten me on that area.
“They said he is finding fault with everything his predecessor has done, including even things that the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) had approved…!”, he noted further, adding that it was however possible that the Minister was being misunderstood.
But a freight forwarder, however, praised Mu’azu for what he called “Mu’azu’s seemingly delayed tactics’, emphasizing that the Minister was probably bidding his time.
“You know he came with so much ideas from NIWA (Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority).
He definitely would want to put many of such ideas into practice, in a bid to make his mark; the only problem is that the time is truly not in his favour.
“Soon enough, every party man, including the Minister and the National Assembly people would be advised to move to their various constituencies, to assist in a serious campaign.
“I have heard the allegation that the Minister suspended everything needing his Signature, so as to renegotiate, perhaps in his own favour, but I know this may not be true.
In any case, the operators can also afford to sit tight and wait, till he leaves in March or April, by which time the Permanent Secretary would fully take charge again.
The Minister’s image maker, Dr. Sam Idiagbonya however swiftly debunked the allegations, stressing that if there was any delay, it was being caused at the Parastatals’ level, rather than at the Minister’s table.
“If the Minister withholds his pen, how would the release of the last 23 victims of the Kaduna Train attack have been made possible?
“How can that be achieved, without the Minister putting pen on paper?”, Dr. Idiagbonya asked, stressing that the Minister neither generates contracts nor executes it.
On non-renewal of the terminal operators’ licences, the image maker also exonerated Mu’azu Sambo, explaining that the NPA Managing Director, Mohammed Bello-Koko’s panel for determining those set for such renewal must have delayed their strenuous job of meticulous examination, before sending their files, to the Minister’s table.
“The delay is definitely not from the Minister’s table”, the image maker stated further.
In the meantime, one thing is certain: the Minister may have less time than he thinks he does! And for the praying Industry watchers, presently hungry to see Mu’azu create indelible marks, as a first maritime personality coming up as a Minister, the vulture is a Patient Bird!
