Uniper SE and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. have reached an agreement on a project to install a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) at Uniper site in Wilhelmshaven, Germany. 

The FSRU, expected to be the nation’s first, has a planned send-out capacity of 10 bcm/a and an LNG storage capacity of 263,000 cubic meters. It could be in operation as early as the second half of 2022. 

The FSRU will be designed to allow for the loading of small-scale barges to enable the use of LNG as marine fuel. Further, onward transportation of LNG on trucks will be possible.

The project benefits from the existing site in Wilhelmshaven where required infrastructure is already in place. Wilhelmshaven is the only German deepwater port and can be reached without any tidal constraints. In addition, Wilhelmshaven is closely located to the existing pipeline and gas storage infrastructure.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines plans to own, operate and finance the FSRU. Uniper will act as project developer.

A LNG terminal in Germany, especially with the planed large regasification capacity in Wilhelmshaven, would strengthen the security of gas supply in Germany and increase competition to the benefit of end customers, says Uniper, because it enables large quantities of gas to be procured from the global LNG market and thus serves to diversify gas supplies.

In addition to the agreement in respect of the FSRU Wilhelmshaven, Uniper and MOL entered into a binding transportation agreement. Under the agreement MOL will provide Uniper with shipping capacity equivalent to a 180,000 cubic meter LNG carrier. The agreement will commence in December 2020. Uniper intends to use the additional shipping capacity to optimize LNG volumes sourced from Freeport, U.S., and to further leverage its expanding LNG trading activities. Already in 2015, Uniper contracted approx. 0.9 mtpa of U.S. LNG exports. The supply contract has a duration of 20 years.

More LNG Action

Another LNG terminal is planned for Germany. In September 2018, RWE and German LNG Terminal GmbH, the joint venture driving forward an LNG terminal in Brunsbüttel in Northern Germany, reached an agreement for a considerable part of the terminal’s capacity on a long-term basis. The total capacity of the combined LNG import and small-scale terminal will be five billion cubic metres. RWE has signed a contract that guarantees RWE access to substantial annual capacity. Final investment decision is envisaged for late 2019. Construction work will then start in 2020 with the terminal being fully operational by the end of 2022.

In the meantime, three Chinese coasters sank at night Dec 26 in Zhoushan waters, south of Shanghai, being caught in adverse weather with strong wind and high sea.

Meanwhile, Boston-based Sea Machines Robotics has raised USD 10 million that would enable the company to further develop autonomous solutions for the maritime industry.

As informed, the investment marks one of the largest venture rounds for a marine- and maritime-focused technology company and brings the total capital Sea Machines has raised to USD 12.5 million

Sea Machines said it will use the funds to expand the sales and global reach of its recently released line of products, grow the R&D and engineering teams, roll out new product feature sets, and further the company’s lead in developing advanced situational awareness systems for vessels.

The industrial marine sector encompasses a broad domain of significant industries, such as maritime transportation, offshore energy, and commercial fishing and aquaculture. Though each are major contributors to the global economy, they commonly operate near or below break-even, in large part due to continued reliance on 20th-century methodologies and technologies. Today’s autonomous technology offers proven solutions to these challenges and is already being used to retool and modernize the industry for the better, according to Sea Machines.

“We are creating the technology that propels the future of the marine industries. This investment enables us to double down on our commitment to building advanced command and control products that make the industry more capable, productive and profitable,” Michael Gordon Johnson, founder and CEO, Sea Machines, commented.

The Series A investment was led by Accomplice and Eniac Ventures, with participation from Toyota AI Ventures; Brunswick Corp., through investment partner TechNexus Venture Collaborative; NextGen VP, Geekdom Fund; LaunchCapital; LDV Capital and others.

“Sea Machines’ autonomous technology and advanced perception systems can reduce costs, improve efficiency and enhance safety in the multi-billion dollar commercial shipping industry. This marks our first investment in the maritime industry, and we’re excited to embark on this journey with Sea Machines,” he added.

“Eniac Ventures is excited to back Michael Johnson and the Sea Machines team – the leading maritime and robotics experts solving this industry’s most critical issues, including labor, safety, efficiency and cost,” Vic Singh, founding general partner, Eniac Ventures, said.

“The level of traction they have from the global maritime industry is a telltale sign that the industry is the next frontier for autonomy,” he continued.

“I think this investment sends a strong signal on the types of technologies that will come to define the maritime industry in the future,”  P. Michael A. Rodey, senior manager, A.P. Moller-Maersk, pointed out.

Sea Machines is currently developing advanced perception and navigation assistance technology for a range of vessel types, including container ships. In the first quarter, the company will initiate testing of its perception and situational awareness technology aboard one of Maersk’s newbuild ice-class containerships.

In October, Sea Machines released its introductory line of autonomous command and remote control systems, developed for the demanding challenges of vessels serving the offshore commercial, scientific and government applications.

NPA: Tinubu Sacks Bello-Koko, Appoints Dantsoho New MD; Sen. Adeyeye Chairman

President Bola Tinubu has kicked out the Nigerian Ports Authority NPA Managing Director, Muhammed Bello-Koko and replaced him with Dr Abubakar Dantsoho. He also approved the appointment of Sen. Adedayo Adeyeye as Chairman of the NPA Board.

A statement by his spokesman, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the new Managing Director is a core professional and holds a PhD, in Maritime Technology.

“Dr Dantsoho holds a Doctorate in Maritime Technology from Liverpool John Moores University, United Kingdom, and a Master’s degree in International Transport from Cardiff University of Wales, United Kingdom.

“Senator Adeyeye, the Board Chairman, is a seasoned lawyer, journalist, and politician,” the statement further said.

The National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) has expressed concern over the lack of understanding among some freight forwarders regarding the role of the Enforcement Unit of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) at Tin Can Port.

In a statement released by NAGAFF Headquarters, the association emphasized that the Enforcement Unit serves as gatekeeper and an intervention force, mandated to police the ports and border stations, acting on intelligence information from the Customs Intelligence Unit, Interpol, and informants.

NAGAFF clarified that the Customs Intelligence Unit operates effectively, bursting revenue crimes in customs ports, and encouraged freight forwarders to report any corruption or observations to the appropriate authorities.

The association advised freight forwarders to maintain professional standards, ensuring genuine declaration of imports and exports for customs purposes, as non-disclosure is an offence against customs laws, leading to seizure and prosecution.

NAGAFF assured high response rates from its High Command to protect genuine declarations and compliance, emphasizing that the Comptroller General of Customs and his management team will not tolerate any corrupt acts.
