…As Okoh inspires upcoming females, bags FOMI’s award for Excellent Performance
Nigeria’s revered maritime company, Melsmore Marine Ltd has expressed concern that the percentage of female seafarers serving in the global shipping fleet has remained unchanged at two per cent in the last 40 years, despite Nigeria’s female total population, which reportedly stands at 49.45 per cent in 2023.
Melsmore’s Human Resources Manager, Okoh Gladys Nwakaego indicated this, noting recent reports which showed that only 26, out of the 250 students of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron are females, representing just 10.4% of the student population. She subsequently revealed the company’s determination to influence a turnaround, by broadening career opportunities for the girl-child in the Nigerian Maritime industry.
Okoh Gladys Nwakaego highlighted this when delivering a lecture on the theme: “Giving Your Beauty a Meaning”, while treating the topic, Career Prospects For Women In Maritime Sector, during a ‘Face of Maritime International’ FOMI, Season 9 event.
Speaking specifically on the need for more women to seek career opportunities in the maritime industry, Gladys quoted the WISTA report, which noted that only 20 per cent of Maritime Leadership Positions are currently held by Women, hence the need for enlightenment and redirection.
“All over the World, the maritime industry, is a traditionally male-dominated sector, but today it is increasingly recognizing the value of diversity and inclusion, creating opportunities for women to pursue rewarding careers”, Mrs. Okoh Gladys Nwakaego stated, adding that the maritime industry encompasses various sectors related to the sea, shipping and logistics, Port and terminal operations, Offshore energy (oil, gas, renewable), Maritime tourism (cruise, yacht, ferry), Naval architecture and engineering, and navigation.
“The percentage of female seafarers serving in the global shipping fleet has remained unchanged at 2% in the last 40 years.
“Female (per cent of the total population) in Nigeria was reported at 49.45 % in 2023, according to the World Bank collection of development indicators, compiled from officially recognized sources.
“A recent report also showed that 26 out of the 250 students at the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron are female representing 10.4% of the student population.
While 20% of Maritime Leadership Positions are held by Women according to (WISTA) report.
“This population of women who hold leadership positions have built their careers within the industry over the years.
Today, we shall be looking at how we can achieve this feat in this industry through career prospects”, the Human Resources Manager said, offering a mild definition of what a career act is.
“The Oxford English Dictionary defined “Career” as a person’s course or progress through life (or a distinct portion of life). This definition relates “career” to a range of aspects of an individual’s life, learning, and work.
“A career was also defined by organizational behaviour researchers as “an individual’s work-related and other relevant experiences, both inside and outside of organizations, that form a unique pattern over the individual’s life span.”
“Career” is used to describe an occupation or a profession that usually involves specific training and/or formal education, considered to be a person’s lifework. In this case “a career” is seen as a sequence of related jobs, usually pursued within a single industry or sector: one can speak for.
“Prospect is from a LATIN word Prospectus which means a view or outlook.
“Prospect could also mean “a way of looking ahead and expecting good things”. A possibility that something fabulous will happen.
Looking into the future with great and high expectations. Becoming what you desire to be”, she further said.
Emphasizing the availability of opportunities in the industry, Okoh mentioned the huge contributions of business Amazons like Princess Vicky Haastrup, a co-founder, and Executive Vice-Chairman of ENL Consortium Ltd; and Chairperson, Seaport Terminals Operators of Nigeria STOAN; Wumi Eniola Jegede, a business development and Strategic Planning expert in SIFAX; the late chieftain of the nation’s fishing trawlers association, Barrister Margaret Orakwusi; and the WISTA President, Eunice Ezeoke, amongst several others.
Consequently, she provided a breakdown, in terms of promising careers in the Maritime Industry, especially those offering diverse and rewarding opportunities, driven by global trade, technological advancements and sustainability initiatives.
“These rewarding career roles and opportunities include; Captain / Master, Chief Engineer, Navigation Officer, Maritime Lawyer, Maritime Administrator, Ship Surveyor, Port Manager, Logistics Coordinator, Marine Engineer, Maritime Consultant e.t.c.
“There are career paths you need to follow through to occupy the above roles and positions;
