NSC: Dera Nnadi Introduces Strategic Solutions to Overcome Nigerian Ports' Challenges

…Tin Can Island Ports Customs Command Controller Comprehensively Reviews Port Operations, Proposes Efficiency-Boosting Strategies

At the recent Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) Stakeholders’ Sensitization Summit in Apapa, Comptroller Dera Nnadi, Comptroller of the Tin Can Island Port Customs Command, delivered an impactful presentation.

His lead paper, titled “The Roles of Nigeria Customs Service in the Evacuation of Cargoes from Seaport to the Hinterland,” provided a frank analysis of the ongoing challenges within Nigerian ports and outlined strategic measures to improve operational efficiency.

Compt. Nnadi highlighted several critical obstacles impeding port operations, including:

  1. Inadequate Infrastructure
  2. Inefficient Port Operations
  3. Regulatory and Customs Delays
  4. High Traffic Volume
  5. Security Concerns
  6. Poor Management Practices
  7. Lack of Automation
  8. Ineffective Handling Processes

These issues, he explained, contribute to extended turnaround times, bureaucratic delays, and a poorly trained workforce, all of which significantly reduce the overall efficiency of port operations.

Comptroller Nnadi also discussed the widespread consequences of port congestion, such as:

  1. Economic Impact: Rising operational costs, demurrage fees, and increased consumer prices.
  2. Decreased Trade Competitiveness: Discouraging international trade partners and investors negatively affects the national economy.
  3. Supply Chain Disruptions: Delays in deliveries, inventory shortages, production setbacks, and rising costs.
  4. Environmental Concerns: Increased emissions, pollution, and deteriorating air quality.
  5. Loss of Perishable Goods: Spoilage, financial losses, and potential food shortages.
  6. Infrastructure Strain: Accelerated wear and tear, frequent repairs, and higher maintenance costs.

To address these challenges, Compt. Nnadi proposed a detailed “Way Forward,” which includes:

  1. Infrastructure Investments
  2. Enhancing Operational Efficiency
  3. Streamlining Customs Procedures
  4. Improving Hinterland Connectivity
  5. Capacity Planning and Management
  6. Fostering Public-Private Partnerships
  7. Strengthening Security Measures
  8. Implementing Green Port Initiatives

The highly informed officer highlighted that Nigerian ports will significantly improve efficiency, reduce congestion, and support sustainable growth by implementing these strategic solutions.

He maintained that these changes will also reposition the ports into a modern, environmentally responsible gateway contributing to the country’s economic development and global trade competitiveness.

Compt. Nnadi’s presentation laid the groundwork for a unified effort among stakeholders to transform Nigerian ports into efficient and competitive hubs for international commerce.
