- Court grants Nnamdi Kanu bail,
- To produce Jewish leader as surety
The ongoing improvements in Ports facilities at Onne, particularly the channel depth may have attracted the commendations of the Berthing Meeting Stakeholders, which also highlighted that it would positively impact on their operations.
“We commend NPA for improving on the draught of the water channels at Onne to hit between 10.50 – 11ft”, Mr. Pius Amem, the leader of the group indicated, during their recent Shipping Position (Berthing) Meeting at Onne Port.
He observed that with the noticeable improvement in the draught so far achieved, in line with international standard, that the NPA only needed to step up action to advertise their facilities, so that importers and vessel owners could further attract more patronage to the Onne Port, as well as other Nigerian Ports.

He also expressed the satisfaction of the Berthing partners, lauding the Authority’s Management for their introduction of automating system of payment and advised on the need to review Port charges to make it more attractive to Port users, adding that these were needed to make the ports more business friendly.
He was particularly happy that the Onne Port could handle Ocean going vessels, and different tankers, as well as even bulk cargo, maintaining that the channel has been relatively peaceful.

Meanwhile, the Port Facility Security Officers (PFSO) Forum Niger Delta Maritime Security Area (NDMSA) has ended her 2017 Annual Conference at Onne Port Complex in Rivers State, with the election of a 9- member executives to run its affairs for the next two years.
The chief host of the two day program, the Onne Port Complex Manager, Alhassan Ismaila Abubakar while welcoming the participants to peaceful deliberations, also admonished them to remain undistracted from the security import of their meeting, even as he stressed his joy that on the reduction of the Security level in Onne Ports and other facilities from level 2 to 1.
The Port Manager was represented by the Traffic Manager Mr. Adukanya Edward.
The results of the election, indicated to be peaceful saw Barr. Emmanuel Onyebadi of Notore Chemical Company, Port-Harcourt being re-elected as the Chairman of the body, while Umar Mohammed of Nigerian Ports Authority emerged as the Vice Chairman.
The position of the secretary went to Mr. Austine Dufegha of Bua Ports and Terminal Port-Harcourt, with Adeyefa Matthew of NPA emerging as his Asst. Secretary. The position of Financial Secretary went to Mr. Akindele Olajide PSO (FOT) of NPA with Mr. Bobby Gclami his Asst. Financial Secretary of AMS Warri.
Others also elected were Lloyd Iluma PSO (FLT) NPA as the Treasurer while the provost is Mr.Julius George of Julius Berger when the position of PRO went to Mr. Fidelis Okwu of Sherlink Logistics, Calabar.
In the meantime, the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, who is facing charges bordering on treasonable felony.
Trial Justice Binta Nyako said her decision to release Kanu on bail was based on health grounds. The court held that Kanu must produce three sureties, including a “highly respected and recognised jewish leader”.
According to the court, aside a jewish leader, Kanu must also produce a “highly placed person of Igbo extraction such as a Senator”, as well as “a highly respected person who is resident and owns landed property in Abuja”.
Each of the sureties are to deposit N100million each. As part of his conditions for bail, Kanu, was expressly barred from attending any rally or granting any form of interview. “I must stress it here that the defendant must not attend any rally. He must not be in a crowd exceeding 10 persons”, the Judge warned.
Justice Nyako equally held that Kanu who has been in detention since October 14, 2015, when he was arrested by security operatives upon his arrival to Nigeria from the United Kingdom, must sign an undertaken to make himself available for trial at all times.
Kanu was ordered to surrender his Nigerian and British international passports, even as the court compelled FG to return to him, his wedding ring and reading glasses.
However, Kanu’s co-defendants, Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi were denied bail by the court which has fixed July 11 and 12 to commence their trial.
Meanwhile, Kanu has been returned to Kuje Prison pending perfection of his bail conditions. Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose was among dignitaries that were in court for the ruling.
