The sudden demise of the Shipping Industry’s Icon, Barr. Margaret Nkem Onyema-Orakwusi may not have been such a devastating shock but for her dexterity, Selflessness, and altruistic commitment to the growth of the Nigerian Maritime industry.
This was the encapsulated views of core stakeholders, which included the Ship Owners Association of Nigeria SOAN President, Dr. Mkgeorge Onyung, revered Maritime lawyers and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SANs), Mike Igbokwe and Agbakoba, amongst others.
“Fellow Maritime Stakeholders and Shareholders! It griefs my heart that at this time and moment, the Lord Almighty should take to Himself, one of our really very truly indefatigable, always Cheerful-hearted, highly devoted, amiable Maritime enthusiast and trustee of the Ship Owners Association of Nigeria;
Barr. Mrs. Margaret Nkem Onyema-Orakwusi.
“So-so- Sad…..
“But, the Almighty God, the Omniscience, knows all things.
“We, therefore, pray that God Bless and keep her soul in His bosom, and may the gentle soul of Mrs. Margaret Orakwusi and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, Rest in perfect peace. Amen!!”, High Chief Dr. Mkgeorge Onyung, prayed.
Speaking in the same vein, the President, of the Nigerian Association of Master Mariners, Capt Tajudeen Alao described Orakwusi as a Bridge Builder and Maritime Icon, whose sudden exit has devastated stakeholders.
“We at Nigerian Association of Master Mariners received with shock the news of the death of a Maritime Icon.
“A lawyer with over three decades in the maritime industry. A front-line shipping guru.
“A bridge builder with uncommon vision. A gentle and distinguished colleague who is always ready to serve.
“I remembered the role she played during the burial of the late Capt Omoteso, especially and late Capt Adeyemo.
“Her struggle for growth and survival of Fish Trawling….
“She had called on me to discuss how to organise a reception and award for Hon Rotimi Amaechi, the immediate Minister of Transportation.
“She discussed the industry and challenges she was facing on construction of her new container jetty”, Capt. Alao said, held his breath, and painfully added:
“It was Otunba Folarin early in the year. It is Lady Orakwusi now.
“Who next….?
“The industry will forever miss her. Adieu… Lady Margaret Orakwusi!”, Capt. Tajudeen Also also said.
Senior Advocates of Nigeria SANs are genuinely revered wherever they are. But, Mike Igbokwe and Agbakoba are particularly held in high esteem, because of their personal commitment and altruistic dedication to the nation’s Maritime industry.
Igbokwe described Orakwusi as a Sister with a heart, genuinely big enough to generously stand by friends and industry Operators.
“Margaret was a sister with a big heart. Very generous, very supportive and friendly.
“We were members of the same maritime platform she chaired and assisted.
“Apart from working together in the same maritime industry, I knew she had a passion for the growth of the domestic maritime industry and worked hard to see it grow and be strong. She was active in seeing to that.
“Her death was sudden and shocking and it is a big loss to our Maritime Industry and our nation.
“May her kind soul rest in peace. May the Lord give her family and all of us the strength to bear the loss.
“May d Lord who loved us so much that He sent His son Jesus Christ to die for us on the cross to save our souls, satisfy all of us with long life and good health to enjoy it”, Mike Igbokwe stressed further.
Speaking in the same vein, another Senior Advocate, Agbakoba said it was truly painful. “Very painful loss!”
But one key stakeholder is still dumbfounded: Andy Isichei, as he stressed the fact that Orakwusi never showed ill health till her sudden exit.
“I saw Mrs. Margaret Orakwusi last, exactly three Sundays ago, just before the 10 am. mass started.
“We, as usual, hugged each other, exchanged our usual pleasantries, and I left her to attend the 10 am Mass. There was no sign to show that she was very ill or ill at all. The news of her demise, over the weekend, was, therefore, very devastating, to say the least.
“Our consolation, therefore, should be that she made her mark while on this planet Earth. She ran a good race and left enduring legacies in her family life, her businesses, and in the maritime industry, which she loved so much.
“May our good lord have mercy upon her soul and grant her eternal rest in his blossom.
“May she continue to rest in peace, and may God’s banner continue to protect the family she left behind. Amen”, Isichei, still in shock, concluded.
