WEEKEND GINGER: The Port, the Goons …the Guns!

Published

on

Goons don’t play with guns! A sonnet is different from a sonata!

As a matter of fact, a goon is not allowed  to play with a gun. The cost is often either too high on him; or the environment.

However, the opposite is the case in Nigeria: here goons play with guns! Especially, when they seemingly want to celebrate a retired Army Colonel, who is also a Comptroller General of Customs  (CGC).

Those who saw the CGC, Hameed Ali in Lagos on Thursday, in spite of the seriousness of the occasion, could see a ‘batch’ of satisfactory feelings, an unhidden ‘balls’ of accomplishment oozing out of him! No little thanks to the goons!

First, they shipped in 440 riffles sometimes in February 2017; and futilely attempted to clear in through the Tin Can Island Port Customs Command. They were caught! Call it bad business.

They took a step backward; went back to the drawing board, redrew the map, re-graphed and came back with 661 deadly rifles. This time, through the Apapa port. Again, they were caught!

Anyone with common sense at this point should understand that it was either the security situation in the port was being underrated or had changed.

Several observers are today blaming the Billionaire kidnapper (Or is it adultnapper?)  Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, popularly known as Evans, for singing like a parrot.

What they failed to realise was that Evans was endowed with Common Sense. He had the brains to move the streets, from a common two-pense criminal driver, to Magodo-dwelling billionaire kingpin! Evans knew the game was up. Evans is endowed with raw common sense!

Alh. Inde Dikko Abdullahi, Former Comptroller General Of Customs

Then came the month of September. Another batch of ammo sailed, even heavier batch than before, consisting of 1,100 pump action rifles was deposited again at Tin Can.

The CGC called a press conference; to tell the world that he has moved the Lagos ports  security to a higher level. Nigerians can go to bed and sleep with both eyes closed. He took all the credit.

But somebody somewhere, working in the dark room had not finish developing the ‘negatives’ let alone print the pictures. The Customs Area Controller, Bashar Yusuf, on an ingenious initiative, took to profiling, and came up with another batch of 470 deadly guns!

The goons are making the CGC popular. At this point, and with such feat, any CGC can look the Presidency in the eyes and override the Ease of doing Business order. It all depends now, on whatever the CGC wants!

The principle in governance stipulates: Issues of State security always take preeminence over all issues of human rights or personal freedom! Can someone also highlight this to my friends in the IPOB?

Congratulations Ali. Again, Congratulations.

Ali is working on a two- layer security arrangement. First, a reinforced layer of the general Customs procedure. Then, the second layer, put in place, by the Customs Intelligence Unit.

Actually, the former CGC, Dikko Inde Abdullahi installed a three-layer security arrangement. The third is the ‘deadly’, mobile and ubiquitous CG Taskforce! They move like shadows. They bring intimidating results. Smugglers can hardly hope you escape the three layers!

Congratulations Dikko! Your steps have seemingly remained indelible too!

Without these, who knows? Perhaps, by now, cleaners would probably be unveiling rifles in dust bins in Tin Can!

Congratulations Nigerians!

May the President live forever!

CUSTOMS: CGC Adeniyi Records 117% Increase In Import Value In 2024

… Says we witnessed a substantial increase in export volume, processing 12.35 billion kilogrammes

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in 2024, recorded a 117.4 per cent increase in import value.

The Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi MFR, disclosed this Tuesday while briefing newsmen in Abuja.

Ironically, the high value was recorded despite, an 8.2 per cent decrease in transaction volume, from the previous year’s 1.376 million transactions.

The CGC, Adeniyi said that the service processed imports with a Cost, Insurance, and Freight (CIF) value of N60.29 trillion in 2024, representing a remarkable 117.4 per cent increase from N27.74 trillion in 2023.

“Higher value recorded, despite an 8.2 per cent decrease in transaction volume from the previous year’s 1.376 million transactions, indicates a shift towards higher-value goods, in our import trade portfolio”

He said that the feat was achieved through 1.262 million import transactions, handling a total mass of 15.35 billion kilogrammes.

“The higher value recorded despite an 8.2 per cent decrease in transaction volume from the previous year’s 1.376 million transactions indicates a shift towards higher-value goods in our import trade portfolio.

“Our export trade performance was equally impressive, with the total CIF value rising significantly to N136.65 trillion in 2024 from N42.77 trillion in 2023, marking a 219.5 per cent increase.

“This 234 per cent increase in export mass, coupled with the higher value, indicates a robust growth in our export trade and suggests increasing competitiveness of Nigerian products in the international market”

“While the number of export transactions remained relatively stable at 38,199 compared to 38,294 in 2023, we witnessed a substantial increase in export volume, processing 12.35 billion kilogrammes in 2024 compared to 3.70 billion kilogrammes in 2023.

“This 234 per cent increase in export mass, coupled with the higher value, indicates a robust growth in our export trade and suggests increasing competitiveness of Nigerian products in the international market,“ he said.

According to Adeniyi, the trade value handled by the service in 2024 totalled N196.94 trillion, compared to N70.50 trillion in 2023, reflecting a 179.3 per cent increase.

He said that the substantial growth in trade value, achieved with fewer but more valuable transactions, was evident in the increasing sophistication of Nigeria’s international trade and the effectiveness of its trade facilitation measures.

He said that in 2024, the NCS made progress in its technological infrastructure, including the pilot testing of its indigenously developed customs clearance platform, “B’Odogwu”.

He said that the progress was made possible with support from its concessionaires under the Trade Modernisation Project.

The Customs Boss said that another key milestone in 2024 was the commencement of its phased relocation to the new corporate headquarters, which began in the fourth quarter.

He said that the new headquarters was expected to be fully operational by the end of the first quarter of 2025.

According to him, the NCS  has secured approval for the establishment of the Nigeria Customs Service University for Trade and Technology in Badagry, Lagos.

He said that it was part of efforts to enhance its operational efficiency and service delivery,

“This institution is envisioned to become a centre of excellence for Customs and trade-related studies, contributing to capacity building in Nigeria and the West African region,“ he said.
