… As Accidents claim 46 lives on Lagos-Ibadan expressway in 9 months***
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Niger on Tuesday confirmed the early morning death of six persons in a multiple accident that occurred on the Lapai-Agaiye-Bida road on Tuesday.
FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Mr Joel Dagwa, told newsmen in Minna that three other persons sustained various degrees of injuries in the auto crash.
He blamed the accident on the loss of control and brake failure and advised motorists to exercise caution and adhere strictly to speed limits while driving.
He said that five trucks were involved in the accident, which occurred at about 5 a.m., and that they caught fire.
“Nine persons were involved in the accident; six died while three sustained various degrees of injuries and were all evacuated to Lapai General Hospital.

He added that the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the morgue in the same hospital, while those injured were already responding to treatment.
“We will sustain our aggressive patrols across all major highways to ensure that road users adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations to avoid road accidents, Dagwa said.
In the meantime, the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) in Ogun on Tuesday, said 46 persons died in 132 road accidents on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway between January and September.
Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Public Relations Officer of TRACE, disclosed this to newsmen in Abeokuta.
Akinbiyi explained that the accidents involved 111 motor vehicles and 21 motorcycles, saying that it claimed the lives of 33 males and 13 females.
The TRACE spokesman added that 196 people were injured during the period under review which comprised 125 male and 71 female.
He stated that 46.13 per cent of the accidents were caused by excessive speed, 22.58 per cent by dangerous driving, 10.68 per cent by bad tyres, 6.04 per cent by driving against traffic and 14.57 per cent by other causes.
He noted that the TRACE had continued to sensitise motorists to always abide by traffic rules and regulations.
Akinbiyi added that the command would continue to engage transport union leaders on the need to drive safely and avoid excessive speeding.
