Gunmen attack bullion van in Ore, kills driver, policeman

… As Plateau Assembly urges Gov. Lalong to act fast, stop killings***

The Police Command in Ondo has confirmed the attack on a bullion van in Ore by gunmen.

The police also confirmed the killing of the bullion van driver and a policeman during the attack.

The newsmen report that the attack occured on Wednesday evening in the Costain axis of the commercial town of Ore, Odigbo Local Government Area of the state.

Newsmen recall that the attack occured barely two weeks after a bullion van was also attacked in the Emure-Ile axis of the state by suspected armed robbers.

According to an eye witness: “The dare-devil armed robbers opened fire on the bullion van which was carrying an undisclosed amount of money and the police escort car.

“The bullion van driver and a policeman were shot dead in the process while the undisclosed amount of money in the bullion van was carted away by the gunmen after the attack.”

Confirming the incident to newsmen on phone, DSP Funmilayo Odunlami, said that the police are on the trail of the assailants.

She said that investigation has begun, urging residents with useful information to assist the police in the investigation that would lead to the arrest of the assailants.

“Yes, I can confirm to you that the driver of the bullion van and a police officer died in the attack, but the police have launched their investigation to trail the gunmen.

“We urge residents who have concrete information to come forward, we don not need them to drop their names but give us useful information that will lead to the arrest of the gunmen,” Odunlami urged.

She, however, said that the corpses of the victims have been deposited at an undisclosed hospital morgue while those that sustsined injuries were given necessary treatment.

Newsmen report that the attack is the third in six weeks, as no fewer than four policemen had so far been killed in such attacks.

In another development,   Plateau State House of Assembly has expressed concern over the rising waves of killings in the state and urged Gov. Simon Lalong to act fast and end the bloodletting.

The lawmakers who made the call during its plenary on Wednesday, said that the situation is getting out of hand if not handled with the urgency it deserves.

The call is in reaction to a motion of matter of urgent of public importance moved by the House Minority Leader, Mr Peter Gyendeng, who is also the Chairman, House Committee on Security and Labour.

Gyendeng drew the attention of legislators to the incensant killings across in the state, especially the Tuesday night attack at Yelwa Zangam village in Jos North Local Government where many people were killed.

Members in their various submissions, unanimously emphasised that the killings across the state have become a thing of serious concern as people were being killed on a daily basis.

The Assembly, in its resolution, read by the Speaker, Abok Ayuba, mandated Gov. Lalong to visit victims of the attack receiving treatment in various heath facilities.

“The governor should pay a condolence visit to the affected communities to sympathize with them and provide urgent compensation to the victims.

“Take adequate steps to stop the spate of the attack and killings of innocent citizens”.

The lawmakers told the governor to act in the same way he did during the Rukuba road incident and lamented the preferential treatment on the part of the security agencies.
