The organised labour union Monday evening, called off its ochestrated nationwide industrial action scheduled to commence Tuesday morning, to press home workers’ demand for a new national minimum wage, leaving confused workers wondering if leadership actually buckled, under several Government pressure.
Nigeria Labour Congress, National Chairman Ayuba Wabba late night, told newsmen at the end of tripartite committee set up to come up with the new minimum wage on Monday evening that the decision to suspend the action was reached after agreements were reached and documents signed.
He however failed to indicate the either the nature or the exactitude of how much workers may now earn.
“Having reached this position and agreements signed, the proposed strike action is hereby suspended,” Wabba said, without disclosing any figure of the new minimum wage arrived at by the committee, except that only one figure would be presented to the President.
An oil industry worker who spoke on conditions of anonymity expressed concern, saying he actually expected a better performance than this.
“This is not the way we call of strikes. Wabba has turned the whole thing into a one-man show!”, he stated, warning that Wabba should not allow workers to lose confidence in labour leadership.
The Chairman of the committee, and former Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Amma Pepple was however delighted by the outcome, and stressed that their assignment had been well concluded.
“I am happy to report to you that we have concluded our assignment and we will submit our report to the President by 4.15pm on Tuesday (today).
“We will reveal the figure at the presentation,” she said.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, thanked members of the committee for doing a wonderful job.
He described the process as a long journey.
