Officials said 29 people died on Tuesday amid Taliban attacks on security force members in two provinces and a mysterious explosion in a hotel room.

Provincial Council Member, Faridullah Bakhtawar, said a large number of Taliban militants attacked two highway police checkpoints in Balabulok district in Farah early Tuesday, killing at least 16 officers.

According to Bakhtawar, five others were killed in a separate attack on a security checkpoint in the capital city of Farah.

He said, additionally, four others police officers are missing after an attack in the capital city of Farah.

However, the numbers were not clear.

Provincial spokesman, Mohammad Mehri confirmed the attacks, but only noted eight police officers dead and two injured.

Afghan government spokesmen are known to regularly minimise casualty figures for public consumption.

Provincial Council Member, Razia Baloch, said, separately, five police officers were killed and six others injured when armed Taliban militants attacked a checkpoint in Nad Ali district of embattled Helmand province late Monday.

Claiming responsibility for both attacks, Taliban spokesman, Qari Ahmadi tweeted that the militia had detained 10 officers and killed dozens others.

Meanwhile, at least three civilians died in a mysterious explosion in a hotel in the eastern city of Jalalabad.

The provincial capital of Nangarhahr has, of late, seen many attacks on civilians by the Islamic State movement.

However, the causes of the explosion and the identity of the victims remained initially unclear, provincial spokesman, Attaullah Khogyani, said.
