Core stakeholders appreciate the intimidating credentials and endowment Nigeria is blessed with.
To them, especially people like the Doyen of the Nigerian Maritime industry, Chief Adebayo Babatunde Sarumi; Nigeria’s foremost shipping mogul, Engr. Greg Utonwen Ogbeifun and the Chairman, Ports Consultative Council (PCC), Otunba Kunle Folarin; the pains they must constantly bear includes knowing where the industry is, Knowing where it should be and watching opportunities squandered as they come!
We only asked Engr. Ogbeifun the simple question of why can’t a great country like Nigeria entrench a functional global shipping regime like the Mearsk Shipping Line and the answers flow, even though in summary!
“I will summarise, it is very simple: this country do not have an enabling environment for the establishment of global trading.
“Number one, our tax laws need to be reviewed; number two, there has to be a genuine desire by the government to support private sector initiative to grow into global trading.
“Number three, we have to urgently restructure our National Registry and our Flag Administration.

“I will give you an example: I would come to it down the line because I have decided to singularly take the Bull by the horn to establish a Nigerian Crude oil Tanker Fleet, knowing all the challenges we have identified am going into.
“Am not going into it because I want to setup a business, but am going into it to highlight the possibility, benefits and the challenges.
“I would get to a point where government would say ‘Okay, this is possible!’; but because of these obstacles most of time put in place by government policies, we are loosing all these benefits that can change or help our Country’s economy!
