Three people were injured in a gas explosion that occurred in Ijebu-Ode area of Ogun on Monday.

The newsmen gathered that the incident happened on Monday at Folagbade Road in Ijebu-Ode.

According to an eyewitness, the explosion was caused by a gas cylinder which belonged to one of passengers having a ride in a commercial tricycle.

The eyewitness explained that the rider of the tricycle parked by the roadside when the cylinder owner discovered that gas was leaking from the filled cylinder.

He said the tricycle was parked near a faulty car with a radiator problem.

“The rider of the tricycle parked by the roadside for the woman to fix the leaking cylinder, but unfortunately there was a car with a radiator problem also parked nearby.

“The heat generated from the car triggered the explosion,” the eye witness said.

He disclosed that the accident involved three people, adding that one of the victims was severely injured.

According to him, the victims who suffered third degree burns were rushed to Ijebu-Ode General Hospital, but the hospital refused to treat them and they were taken to an unknown hospital.

In another development, the Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele, says the bank will increase its development finance interventions to further support start-ups and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the country.

Emefiele made the pledge while delivering the 51st Convocation Lecture of the University of Lagos, Akoka, on Monday in Lagos.

The newsmen report that the lecture has  “National Development and Knowledge Economy in the Digital Age: Leapfrogging SMEs in the 21st Century”, as its topic.

The CBN governor said that increased access to finance for start-ups and SMEs was highly essential for the nation’s economy to grow.

He advised that special consideration should be given to the strengthening of physical and ICT infrastructure, to enable SMEs perform more efficiently and become globally competitive.

“The potential of SMEs in enhancing economic growth is hampered by limited access to finance, inadequate infrastructure and poor digital penetration.

“I urge government and the private sector to provide more support in addressing the challenges of SMEs in the country.

“Specifically, as users of new technology, I advise that policies that would incentivise the adoption of innovations that will improve SMEs competitiveness and productivity should be made,” he said.

He urged relevant stakeholders to deepen reforms that would improve human capital development through skills enhancement and proper linkage of research to the SME sector.

Emefiele advised tertiary institutions in the country to tap into the educational trends that were significant drivers of productivity in advanced and emerging markets.

He said that doing so would help to reshape the existing curriculum, enhance the learning experience of students and foster innovation among the faculty and staff in Nigerian institutions.

The CBN Governor advocated enhanced collaboration between Universities and players in key sectors of the economy: agriculture, manufacturing and ICT.

According to him, this is necessary to enable implementation of sound ideas generated from the universities.

“They should collaborate in the training of relevant manpower to minimise mismatches between the skills required by firms and the educational qualifications of Nigerian graduates.”

Speaking on the role of CBN in the development of SMEs in Nigeria, Emefiele reiterated that the bank had rolled out massive developmental interventions in critical areas such as agriculture, manufacturing and SMEs.

He said that attention had been paid to advancing knowledge and innovation through various initiatives targeted at promoting youths’ entrepreneurship, research and development.

He urged the graduating students to take advantage of some of the bank’s initiative aimed at supporting SMEs.

The CBN initiatives include the SME Credit Guarantee Scheme (SMECGS); Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Fund (MSMEDF); and Youth Entrepreneurship Development Programme (YEDP).

Others are: Agri-business/Small and Medium Enterprises Investment Scheme (AGSMEIS); Creative Industry Financing Initiative (CIFI); Targeted Credit Facility (TCF) and the Nigeria Youth Investment Fund (NYIF).

Earlier, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, said the institution was at the forefront of developing critical manpower required for building and developing the nation.

“For University of Lagos, national development is a key consideration in our academic activities, but we are at the forefront of developing critical manpower required for building and developing our nation.

“Our courses and research thematic areas are focused on preparing our students for nation building and solving societal challenges.

“It is within this context that the University established the entrepreneurship and Skill Development Centre under my former boss, Professor Rahmon Bello, for promoting entrepreneurship activities and orientation among the students and staff.

“This is embedded in the 35 years strategic plans of the University of Lagos which started during the tenure of my former boss, Late Professor Babatunde Sofoluwe.

“We seek to promote self reliance entrepreneurship and exceptional leadership skills and capacities in our students,”he said.

Newsmen report that Dr Tunde Bakare, Founder of The Citadel Global Community Church, chaired the convocation ceremony.

4 Dead, 70 Vehicles Burnt In Fuel Tanker Explosion In Rivers – Police

…Gov. Fubara visits accident scene, describes it as tragic and sad

The Police Command in Rivers says four people and over 70 vehicles were burnt in Friday’s fuel tanker explosion in the state.

The explosion occurred along Eleme section of the East-West Road in the state at about 7:30 p.m.

SP Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesman of the command, told the newsmen in Port Harcourt on Saturday that the tragedy occurred following a collision between a heavy-duty truck and a petrol-laden tanker.

A correspondent who visited the accident scene reports that there were severely burnt vehicles and charred bodies of victims on the road.

The incident happened a few meters from the Indorama Petrochemical Company and roughly 10 kilometres from the Port Harcourt Refinery.

There was an extensive gridlock stretching over five kilometres on the road under reconstruction as part of the N200 billion Ring Road project by the Rivers Government.

State government trucks, accompanied by police and Federal Road  Safety Commission officials, were seen evacuating the burnt vehicles to facilitate traffic flow.

An eyewitness, Onyeka Ubani, who narrowly escaped the explosion, stated that while transporting passengers on his newly acquired tricycle (Keke), they heard a deafening sound ahead of them.

“The loud sound was followed by a massive fireball, causing everyone to flee for safety.

“We managed to escape, but unfortunately, my Keke caught fire in the process.

“I thank God for my life, but I am at a loss about what to do with my life now, having recently purchased this Keke,” a distraught Ubani said.

Another eyewitness, David Jumbo, said that he was returning home from work around the Akpajo axis of the East-west Road when the incident occurred.

He narrated that after the explosion, vehicles and victims were caught by fire which stretched over 200 metres.

“It happened so quickly that it could be likened to scenes from Hollywood movies.

“While I was fleeing for safety, I saw a pregnant woman struggling to exit one of the commercial vehicles.

“Unfortunately, when I returned this morning, I found the deceased pregnant woman trapped in the bus as she tried to escape,” he recounted.

Jumbo attributed the accident to the recklessness of truck drivers who disregarded road warnings despite the ongoing road construction.

Gov. Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers, who visited the accident scene, described it as tragic and sad.

He urged motorists to always exercise caution while on the road.

“This incident is not a pleasant one, we recorded a huge number of vehicles destroyed and lives lost.

“I have already asked the relevant agencies to brief us on how we can support the bereaved families to mitigate their losses.

“This incident would have been avoided if the motorists had adhered to proper conduct. People should ply this road with caution,” Fubara said.
