Published

on

Tragedy struck on Tuesday in Akure following the over 24 hours of rainfall which led to part of a building collapsing and causing the death of a man.

Eyewitnesses told newsmen on Wednesday that the incident occurred around 3.00 p.m., at Itedo Eledumare Street, Oba-Ile in Akure North Local Government Area.

Mrs. Elizabeth Columbus, a tenant in the collapsed bungalow, said that a section of the building wall collapsed on Mr. Titus Adega and his five-year-old son, Kizito Adega, causing the death of the former.

The widow of the deceased, Mrs Margaret Adega, said that the wall of the back section of the building suddenly fell on her husband and son, who were outside, during the rainfall.

“I heard the loud cry of my son from deep in my sleep and I rushed outside to discover him under the rubble of the collapsed wall of the building.

“I tried to extricate him and discovered the unconscious body of my husband on top of him. I believe my husband used his body to protect our son when the wall fell.

“I called out to neighbours who assisted me to extricate them from the rubble and rushed both of them to the maternity centre in the neighborhood.

“There we were asked to take them to the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, but when we got there he was confirmed dead on arrival.”

The widow said that the corpse had been deposited at the mortuary while their son, who had a fracture on the leg and slight bruises on the face, was receiving treatment.

Margaret Adega said that immediately after her son was discharged from the hospital, her husband’s corpse would be taken to Benue for burial.

Mr Gabriel Folahan, the head of the Children’s Emergency Room, said that Kizito Adega was brought in at 4.52 p.m., with bruises on the face and a leg fracture.

Folahan said that the child would be referred to the orthopedic ward for Traction on Thursday.

Investigation however, further revealed that the rainfall wreaked havoc in other parts of Oba-Ile as well as on the Airport road, due to streams overflowing their banks, causing floods that submerged some buildings and destroying personal properties and fences.

The Sector Commander, Mr. Henry Benamesia, said this in a statement by the command’s spokesperson, Mrs Agnes Ogungbemi, on Sunday in Osogbo.

Benamesia said two vehicles had a head-on collision on Saturday at about 9: 44 p.m. due to the brake failure of one of them, resulting to the death of six persons.

He said that an articulated vehicle ( Red Daf ) without a number plate, collided with another blue commercial truck on Imesi -Ile hill with casualties due to speeding.

” We have five dead victims taken to the University Teaching Hospital in Osun (UNIOSUN) by the Nigeria Police before the arrival of the FRSC team.

” The last dead victim was trapped under the truck and we were able to use an extricate machine to remove the trapped body from one of the vehicles, ” Benamesia said.

According to him, the accident involved 17 persons with 11 escaping unhurt while six others lost their lives.

He charged road users to drive defensively in order to prevent any form of accidents.

Benamesia, however, advised drivers to drive with caution and ensure their vehicles were in perfect condition before embarking on any journey.

In another development, three persons were confirmed dead while one other sustained injuries when a Toyota Sienna car plunged into the Omo River, around Area J4, on the Sagamu-Benin Expressway on Saturday.

Mrs Florence Okpe, the Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC)  in Ogun, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Abeokuta on Saturday.

“The accident occurred around 11:55 a.m., and the suspected cause of the crash was excessive speed and loss of control which made the vehicle plunged into the river.

“The vehicle marked APP 830 HX was coming from Benin and heading to Lagos,” she added.

Okpe added that three male adults were found dead while one person sustained injuries in the lone vehicle accident.

The FRSC spokesperson explained that the injured victim was taken to Hope Clinic J4 in the Ijebu-East local government area of the state.

”Bodies of those dead were deposited at the State General Hospital morgue in Ijebu-Ode,” she said.

Okpe quoted the State Sector Commander of FRSC, Anthony Uga, as describing the crash as avoidable if caution was considered.

The sector commander said speed limit violations by motorists, especially the commercial vehicle drivers on that route, as the cause of several road traffic crashes.

“In this case, however, the FRSC sector commander appreciated the efforts of local divers for the rescue operation.

”We also sympathise with the families of the victims, just as we advise them to contact the FRSC Ogbere outpost for more information about the crash,” Okpe said.
